The development of Medic Malawi
Medic Malawi was established in 2001 and has supporters across the UK, with large bases focussed in the south-west and the midlands.
Over many years we have built a strong relationship with the Diocese of Lake Malawi through the work of St Andrew’s Hospital and associated facilities in and around Mtunthama, in the Kasungu District. This work has seen an empty field transformed into a busy hospital providing healthcare services to thousands of people each year. Along with the hospital, our support for the neediest individuals has assisted many vulnerable children within the community.
We have worked closely over a long period with Chimbiya village elders to improve their primary school facilities, in a range of projects that have impacted a large number of children. Chalizya Primary School now benefits from roofed classrooms, furniture, electric light and fresh water, whilst we also look to improve teachers’ accommodation. This has been a relationship established over time with the growing community.
Educational projects were originally led by St Peters Malawi Education Trust, with whom we merged in December 2023, after realising that we were working towards similar goals in the same locality. For three years leading up to the merger the two charities have worked hand-in-hand on a range of projects with common outcomes.
The dedicated project work carried out since 2001 within this part of Malawi has brought significant results. This shows that in partnership with communities and strategic partners on the ground we can help support meaningful and sustainable change.
Building on this success and following a period of strategic planning, we are excited to expand our work towards supporting more sustainable growth. This will positively impact healthcare, access to education and sustainable community development in communities right across Malawi.
