Our work is led by need identified locally by our partners Medicom Foundation, who make a case for a project and we decide how we can support this – financially, logistically or by encouraging in-country funding. It is our intention that over time Medicom becomes self-sustaining, covering its core costs from in-country income generation. We regularly travel to Malawi in order that we keep in close contact with our partners and participants. Tom, our CEO, is out in the field at the moment, and his agenda includes:
Collaboration with Mtunthama Girls Empowerment group and local healthcare professionals to discuss girls’ menstrual health programmes, supporting female students to enable increased school attendance, and their key role in community development.
Operations meetings with Medicom Foundation, including underwriting Safeguarding procedures. Staff reviews, Board Meeting, and development.
Reviewing Medicom’s income-generating farm project at the conclusion of its first year, and planning for the next.
Reinforcing relationships with St Andrew’s Hospital in Mtunthama, to consider upcoming healthcare projects.
Review the deepening financial crisis in Malawi, and the implications for our work.
We look forward to his return when we will look at the impact on our programme of work, and review our projects in the context of the financial conditions in Malawi. We’ll bring you a full trip report on Tom’s return.
The financial situation across Malawi is poor, and we often find ourselves asking you to support us with donations towards existing or new projects. This, of course, is essential to allow us to continue. However we’re also aware of that the cost of living crisis is not restricted to Malawi and many people here at home are affected by price rises and limited income. There are other ways in which your support would be valuable to us and effective to our campaigning:
Sign up to our newsletter to keep in touch with our work; and encourage your friends and family to do so. Share our social media widely, and invite people you know to engage with it. We always welcome advocacy.
Mention our charity to your employer – particularly if you are in one of the fields we work within: healthcare, education, and community development. We’d love to hear from your employer if they would like to become involved with corporate sponsorship, or help-in-kind.
Consider hosting an event to raise awareness of our work. We can assist with media and potentially help make a presentation. We have continually worked with schools, churches and groups such as Rotary who follow our projects and raise money for us through such events.
If you’d like to engage with us about how you might advocate for Medic Malawi, please get in touch.
