‘There is no better present than a future’ (Terry Pratchett, the Hogfather).
As the year comes to a close and we’re able to reflect and spend time with our families, our thoughts turn to what we’ve achieved together, and what we have to look forward to in the new year.
Our leading Roots of Hope programme was established to provide ongoing support to vulnerable children within their communities, and it is proving to be effective and impactful. The families involved have embraced the strategy; engaged fully with the training and implementation; and report improved mental and physical health outcomes, school attendance, income streams and food security. It is just entering its second annual cycle and we look forward to bringing the programme to more individuals, helping them secure a bright future for themselves, their families and their communities.
It is worth reflecting on this in the context of our Mission Statement:
- To bring improved physical and mental health and wellbeing
- To reduce poverty and increase self-sufficiency through sustainable community development
- To bring better life chances through access to education
We strongly believe that the most effective way of helping is to take and to enable sustainable actions. Sometimes all it takes is the right tools, simple training and positive mentoring, to make a truly significant difference and open up a new future for families in need.
Roots of Hope brings a hope-filled future to impoverished and displaced children and their families, giving them a chance to truly thrive in a difficult environment.
This would not be possible without your help, and we wanted to say a huge thank-you for all your support, interest and engagement. When looking forward it is easy to forget how far we’ve come. Amongst the busy-ness of the season, it is good to take a moment to reflect on how privileged we are that we can share your goodwill with our friends and partners in Malawi.
We’d like to bring the following messages to you from our Malawi team:
Leah, our social worker, who has been the backbone of the Roots of Hope project and supported the children through the transition from the closure of AMAO, writes:
‘Warm Christmas greetings to all our supporters. Thank you so much for your continued support, which continues to bring hope to the vulnerable individuals and children. May the joy and peace of this season be with you all.’

Our new senior officer Linda also sends her thoughts:
‘Festive season greetings to all our amazing supporters. Your generosity and acts of kindness make a difference. Thank you, and may God enlarge your territory!’

It has been a very positive year for Medic Malawi and Medicom Foundation, and we have high hopes for the Roots project as it develops in breadth to support more families. We bring you this message in thanks and joy, and wish for you all the best for Christmas and the holiday season.
